  3. exercise program. Most athletes
  4. did not train that hard in the early
  5. 1970ΓÇÖs, and SteveΓÇÖs program was
  6. unusual. He trained by using
  7. isometric exercises, kung fu (a
  8. Chinese martial art similar to
  9. karate), and by twisting his hands
  10. in buckets of rice. His great
  11. conditioning allowed him to make
  12. 30 or more starts in 16 seasons.
