- Steve Carlton really hit his stride as
- a pitcher after he began a special
- exercise program. Most athletes
- did not train that hard in the early
- 1970ΓÇÖs, and SteveΓÇÖs program was
- unusual. He trained by using
- isometric exercises, kung fu (a
- Chinese martial art similar to
- karate), and by twisting his hands
- in buckets of rice. His great
- conditioning allowed him to make
- 30 or more starts in 16 seasons.
